The Value Principle: The Art of Adding Value to Your Life and Other
"Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth." - Muhammad Ali
The principle of value is one of the most important principles you can learn.
Why?
Everything revolves around it.
The most valuable people get the most.
In life, you get what you deserve, and what you deserve is based on how valuable you are. This principle applies to relationships, business, and life.
I learned this in the companies I worked for; the little extra is what makes you valuable.
If you have good results but are not engaged with other colleagues and someone else is, then when there is room for a promotion, the one who has results and is engaged has a higher chance for that promotion.
He does the little extra, beyond just the results he brought.
In friendship, this works the same; the more you give out of goodwill, the more the universe will give back.
Becoming valuable as a person is therefore a good thing to do and strive towards.
So the topics that we are going to talk about are:
Becoming valuable
Valuable in a company
The more you give
At the end of reading this article, you will know how to build yourself as a valuable person for the long run.

Becoming valuable
What does becoming valuable mean?
For me, it means serving better through the skills I develop.
In life, you get what you deserve, and if you’re not valuable, you don’t deserve that much.
"Your value will be not what you know; it will be what you share." - Ginni Rometty
By consistently improving yourself and becoming more competent over time, you can reap the fruits of your labor later on in the journey called life.
The value people see in you is based on results, based on your actions, based on what you provide, on what you generate.
When I am in a sales call for the marketing company that I work for, I always try to make it as valuable as possible.
I want the client to win anyway, whether they buy or not.
When I do this, I can distinguish where they are now with all the struggles that they have, and where they want to go and why they want it, so they are reminded of their own internal motivation.
What I do then is, I give them a strategy so the call is valuable for them no matter what.
And when it is a match, I give them the thing I sell at that moment as additional value from the conversation that we were having.
In that way, I do not sell, I help! People sometimes said to me that they had no intention to buy anything before they came into the call, and now they bought but are happy with it because they see the value and have a strategic way of using it.
What I do is that I am there to give and to serve, within my capabilities.
I always say that I am committed to everyone’s greatness, even if they are not to their own.
Then I reach them a hand with my knowledge and skills that I am consistently improving, and then it is up to them if they take that hand or not.
I do this in business when I am in a sales call, I do this with my friends and in my relationship.
I also try to share all the things I know to help, and be valuable in that way.
“Don't wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don't wish for fewer problems, wish for more skills. Don't wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom.” - Jim Rohn
Valuable in a company
So becoming valuable is consistent improvement of your skills, capabilities, and the way you share it with others through results, based on your actions, based on what you provide and on what you generate.
But how does that work in a company?
In a company, you have multiple lines to serve to get higher up.
You have yourself, the company, and the upper line.
What does this mean?
Serving yourself means getting better at what you do and becoming more skilled in what you do.
If people take away your position, you would still have your skill sets to build on.
The better your skill sets, the more valuable you are and the more you are able to create on your own.
Of course, by improving, you become more valuable for the company as well, but becoming more valuable for the company also means that you do the little extra.
"The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary." - Vidal Sassoon
Connect somewhat more with others, prepare an extra training, take on some extra work.
The more valuable you are, the more people will lean on you and the more powerful you get in your position.
To grow more easily inside a company, you can also be valuable to the upper line—the people that are above you, the people that have a higher position, your managers, the seniors in the company, or whomever.
Be valuable for them, be their eyes and ears.
Why?
If they can do a better job because of you, you will be more valuable for the company and gain more power in the position that you're in because more people trust you and lean on you.
So when you want to climb higher up inside of a company, work on serving: yourself, the upper line, and the company.
When you serve those three, you will be more and more valuable and deserve more within the position of power you created for yourself.
As a company owner, there is just one person you need to serve, and that is your client.
In the end, a business needs to solve a problem, get a client with that problem, and keep a client or must find ways to keep that client.
"Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value." - Albert Einstein
The More You Give
You can become valuable by getting more skilled, by knowing how to position yourself inside a company.
But there is one extra component of becoming valuable and that is giving.
If you're not able to give, you are not able to get.
Being able to give, to share, is what helped me personally to see myself as more valuable. You can have everything in the world, but for what good is it if you're the only one who can enjoy it?
You are not a changed human being if you generate more, do better, and cannot give.
The first time I heard this, I thought to myself, f..ck, I am too focused on generating and improving that I forgot to give and to share.
How I do this now is by giving money to the people who are begging for it at the grocery store that I go to.
What I do now is that I tip people generously if I see that they're hardworking and deliver good service.
Why?
Because I can do it now.
You do not become better by keeping everything for yourself.
"The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." - Pablo Picasso
The bigger the pie, the more there is to share.
The only difference between you and someone else is the choices that you made and that the other person made.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Give your money, give your knowledge, give that compliment to a stranger, give your time, give your attention.
There is so much to give, and the more you give, the more you will be paid back one way or another.
In life, you get what you deserve, and what you deserve is up to you.
We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." - Winston Churchill
