New From Preparation to Presentation: The Ultimate Guide to Showing Up Right

"Eighty percent of success is showing up." - Woody Allen

How do you show up?

Are you prepared?

Are you conscious of the energy you bring to a room?

When you show up, no matter where, you tell a story.

When I was in the period that I did all kinds of auditions for theatre schools, always wearing polos and nice shirts was not my usual.

I had a more alternative clothing style, but in the last conversation I had with that school, I showed up in a suit.

It showed I was prepared,

it showed that I put in effort, and it showed that I wanted to impress by taking it seriously.

They did not expect someone to show up in a suit.

It probably helped because I got accepted.

Around 300 people go to an audition, and around 30 to 20 people get accepted to theater school.

Roughly 10%.

How you show up matters.

If you show up stinking of alcohol, you leave a different impression.

"You never get a second chance to make a first impression." - Will Rogers

The way you show up is literally one of the most important things you need to be conscious of.

It is not only about physically showing up, but that is what we will dive into in this article.

We dive into the topics:

  • The control that you can take

  • What are you willing to do

  • Showing up

After this article, you will know why you need to prepare yourself and also the position you can create.

The world is not fair, but that does not mean that things are impossible.

The control that you can take

Showing up has a couple of points you need to think of, three of those things are about time, volume, and preparation.

If you do things long enough or in really high volume, you get better.

If you prepare really well, you will do better. Be the student for life, always eager to learn more.

"The expert in anything was once a beginner." - Helen Hayes

If you are conscious of those three components, your results will compound over time.

I’ve told this before, but my first sales call was a big joke.

I was shaking, had a half panic attack, was really sweaty, and stumbled over my words.

After my first call, I did my laundry to distract myself and did it again.

Now, more than 1000+ calls further in my journey, I hit multiple 3K plus months.

It cost time, volume, and preparation of my scripts and sales knowledge, but I am further and better than I was back then.

This is about persistence, so not only showing up but keeping on showing up constantly.

Through trial and error, we learn.

"Confidence is a habit, not a trait. The more you do the things you are afraid of, the more confident you will become." - Roy T. Bennett

This principle can be copied in business and in life.

When you're stepping towards a girl, the first few times you can get anxious, but do it enough times and you will get a yes.

Do it prepared, so in this case, have nice clothing on and look fresh, and the yes is a bit closer, and over time you will get better.

Ask yourself the following questions when you're working on something:

  • How prepared was I?

  • How many times did I do this already?

  • For how long have I been trying?

Do more to do better, and give it time.

"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." - Benjamin Franklin

What are you willing to do

The killer of how showing up in a way that serves you is, wanting a lot fast, quick, and easy.

This is a greedy mindset to have.

In life, you get what you earn; what you earn is what you deserve.

The word earning means that you needed to do things to earn.

The questions you can ask are:

  • What do I want?

  • What am I willing to do for it?

And if you lay those two outcomes next to each other, you can prepare yourself mentally.

How you mentally show up also depends a lot on the outcome.

For example, I eventually want to create a position for myself where I will be able to speak publicly and inspire people.

I also want to create a retreat where people can come and grow.

What I need to have is experience; first, I need to create myself before I think I have something to say.

I don’t want to be a fraud; I want results that back up my story.

For now, I have some but not the achievements that I long for.

So I am willing to do a lot to get the experience I need to become the person I need to be and get what I want.

In this year, for example, where now at the end of month six, four of the months I did not drink or use any type of drugs.

I am sacrificing a lot of sleep, and I work almost always 7 days a week.

This brings me experiences and opportunities.

Also, people say that my eagerness to learn is one of my strongest points.

This is how I show up, ready to learn and open for feedback.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - Dr. Seuss

It was not always the case; I had to learn myself to be humble and see myself as an eternal student.

I had to adapt the mindset of a student, I had to adapt the mindset of someone who believes in himself, I had to adapt the mindset of someone who pushes through.

Those mindsets are what I call mentally showing up.

  • Are you willing to set your old beliefs aside to learn and grow?

  • Are you willing to sacrifice things to push that one step further?

Well, if you are, we can talk about showing up in general.

"The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra." - Jimmy Johnson

Showing up

So to take control of what you become or how you eventually show up, you have your matrices of volume, preparation, and time.

And you know you need to prepare yourself mentally, or so-called mentally show up.

Also, you know you will need to sacrifice something.

Now we can talk about physically showing up.

That is about being on time, looking well cared for, and being completely yourself while owning that.

"Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman." - Coco Chanel

We all know a time when someone walked into a room and that person had a sense of calmness, coolness, trust, and confidence around them.

Well, then someone is showing owning his or her space while the person is just being there in time.

When you experience it yourself, you know it in your whole body; you feel it from head to toe.

You can give your full attention and really see others completely, you're listening well, and you're being in the moment.

It is some type of flow state.

I experienced this a couple of times when I was teaching and was really prepared.

I also experienced this a couple of times during sales calls and when I am standing up on a stage.

It feels like I am having complete control.

When you achieve such a stage, when you can get more power over how you show up, things will come your way more naturally.

"Success is where preparation and opportunity meet." - Bobby Unser

It takes work to get this right, to feel completely confident with yourself.

For me personally, it helps when I wear clothing that fits and looks nice.

It helps when I worked out and know I am fit.

And it helps when I am shaved and feel clean.

This all in combination with previously talked about aspects can have a great impact on your life.

For me, it means when I show up right, that I am able to perform better, have more energy, do more, and are able to connect better with people.

"Your energy introduces you before you even speak." - Mimi Lozano

You get what you send

People are small radio antennas; they send out waves and vibrations.

And just like radio antennas, you receive the things that are on your vibration or sequence better than things that are not.

If you show up and work on all the things we talked about that help you show up more in a sequence that fits you, you will receive more vibrations that fit you.

So play with time, volume, and preparation.

Make sacrifices.

Get conscious of how you mentally show up and search for ways that help you show up better physically.

There is no one way that fits all; it is about finding out what fits you by trying, reflecting, and asking yourself questions.
