4 Things That Tune Up Your Growth!
One step backwards is okay if you take three steps forward afterwards.
“It’s not if you want to, it is are you willing to” - Job Baltes
When you're in a situation where you can't go back, you have to do whatever it takes to grow. Keep going until you succeed.
I cannot go back anymore! The effort I put in now gives me the urge that I need to succeed.
By starting to write these articles and creating content.
By choosing not to go to school anymore.
By setting goals and missions for myself.
By envisioning what I want my life to be like.
These are the reasons why I am willing to do whatever is necessary to grow into the person I need to be.
I cannot look at myself in the mirror if I do not embark on this journey.
The pain of regret would consume me, and I would always keep questioning, "What if I did not give up?"
"During my hardest days, I repeated the same phrase to myself: 'I cannot lose if I do not quit.'" - Alex Hormozi
Everybody can dream, but few make it a reality. The lack of personal development and not taking yourself and your goals seriously is what's keeping your dream as a dream instead of a reality.
What I ask myself and what you should ask yourself is:
"What happens if I do not put in the work?"
I will feel:
Incomplete
Like a failure
Unhappy
I also have to work for a boss, which is something that I do not like. It limits my freedom to create my own schedule and create for the better.
I would not grow to my full potential as a person. The work I am doing is likely driven by money, hindering my mission.
The things that I am now experiencing are not always fun, and I am not where I want to be. But it is all part of the journey, and that's what I enjoy.
I started with baby steps, but now the steps are getting bigger. It will always feel like, "Well, now it is really going to start," after you have seen your progress and growth.
The funny thing about that is that you have already started. By every action you take, you are a bit further than the one who did not. Progress is a process.
If you always try to improve yourself and grow, success will be non-negotiable. I know I can create my own world and be successful, so that's what I am doing by taking action. Nothing less.
Here are four tips that have helped me so far in growing as a person!
1).START DOING!!
Well, the first one must be clear now. Start doing!
If you do nothing, you cannot grow. No matter how many books you read, if you don't practice, you won't improve.
It's better to do too much and then scale it down, than to do too little. Scaling down and doing less is easier than needing to do more.
The journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. - Lao Tzu
2). Be uncomfortable
If you take action but only do things you can already do, you're not growing.
You're engaging in some mental masturbation if you're saying you're doing a good job. Instead, do something you can already do.
Do what you hate. What feels good in the he beginning, and bad in the end, is usually bad for you. - Dusan Djukich
If you do what you hate and things that you are not comfortable doing, you will grow. Drinking is fun until the day after.
Talking to a lot of strangers is not fun for most people. But how will you increase your social skills if you don't talk to people?
Confronting your problems is not fun. But how can you come to a solution if you're not confronting the problem?
Confronting your fear is not fun, but how will you overcome it if you don't confront it?
What feels better afterward?
You, if you drank all night and partied, or you when you overcame a fear or stepped out of your comfort zone.
Which version of you will enjoy life better and grow more?
You stayed in bed all day, being worthless, watching Netflix.
VS
You getting out of bed, taking action, working out, and making something of your day and, in the long run, your life.
I can write a whole article about this point alone, so that's for next week...
For now, think about it.
3). Get clarity
Getting clarity can be challenging, but once achieved, it is satisfying. It provides a clear direction on what you can work towards.
What helped me in getting clarity are a couple of things. When I figured those things out, I had my clarity.
What I needed to figure out was:
My life's mission (Read my previous article: How to Create Your "Life's Mission" in 5 Steps!)
My 10-year vision (Make a vision board)
My own principles (Research Ray Dalio)
Knowing what I value (Reflect on yourself)
How I need to be to get where I want to go (dream it and visualize it)
When I have those things clear, I can set my goals and work towards them from my clarity framework. Your base is so steady that you have no excuse or reason not to pursue to achieve your goals.
Know that there are a lot of ways to Rome. This worked for me.
4). Take risks
Throwing myself into the deep, with a desire to avoid a 9 to 5, was a risky decision when I dropped out of school. I needed to find a way to keep my head above water.
The challenges I faced forced me to think creatively and explore alternative solutions. This forced me to grow as a person, and it still continues to force me to grow.
In investing, there is always a risk-reward ratio. High risk is also an opportunity for a high reward, and low risk is, of course, the opportunity for a low reward.
Making some radical choices and standing by them can therefore help to grow. You force yourself to take action and have a need to succeed.
“Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat.” - Napoleon Hill “Think and grow rich”
There is some nuance to it, look at the situation you're in. If you have no backup money, it's not smart.
Risk-reward ratio, think of that. Also, there is a difference between stupid choices and taking risks.
Work towards the points where you can burn all those ships and go all in!!
First, you need to have a boat to burn, a destination to conquer, time, and money as armor. The more you have, the better protected you are. Skill is your weapon; the sharper it is, the easier you can cut.
What to do next?
As always, knowledge is useless if you're not implementing or using it. So what we know now is:
That you need to do something to grow and progress in your journey.
That you need to get uncomfortable to learn; in comfort, you're not learning as much.
That having clarity helps you gain more direction.
That taking risks is good because it forces your growth.
What you can do for this week is reflect on last week using the questions you ask yourself.
What actions did I take to grow? (Going to the gym, eating healthy, not drinking, achieving some goal)
When was I uncomfortable this week and what did I learn from that? Or what was a point in the week where I could have been uncomfortable but did not do and why?
Who was I this week? (lazy, active, happy, sad, a problem solver, a creator)
Who do I want to be next week?
What are risks I can take or fears I can confront to grow?
If you have made that reflection, you can send me a DM, and we can have a little chat about it on Zoom. I WILL ONLY DO A CALL WITH ONE PERSON SO, BE FAST!!
If you want more!!
That's it for now. I wish you a good day - Job Baltes.
